Ottawa ends funding for the National Advisory Committee on Residential Schools Missing Children and Unmarked Burials

Suggested reading

Sad news for the National Advisory Committee on Residential Schools Missing Children and Unmarked Burials funding (NAC), whose funding from Ottawa will not be renewed as of March 31, 2025.

As reported in CBC News and Radio-Canada - Espace autochtones, "More than 100 Indigenous communities in Canada are involved in residential school grave searches, and many encounter barriers trying to access information and resources to carry out that work.

The committee was intended to help lift some of these barriers through technical guidance and support with forensics, ground-penetrating radar, geographic work and archival and genealogical research."

One of the WAGE Partnership's research projects, led by Pamela Colombo and conducted in partnership with the Institut Tshakapesh, uses collaborative research to better understand the history of children in residential schools by attempting to reconstruct the spatial trace of Indigenous children's movements through bureaucratic documents.
